¿On the contrary o To the contrary?

Esta mañana me ha llegado Adam´s Tongue, el último libro de Derek Bickerton sobre los orígenes y la evolución del lenguaje. A media lectura me topo con la frase “So let me, here and now, dissociate myself from vulgar anti-Chomskyanism. To the contrary, while he´s wearing his syntactician´s hat I have nothing but respect and admiration for Chomsky.” La locución to the contrary me ha rechinado aquí un montón. “Pero no puede estar mal usada” he pensado, “¡al fin y al cabo Bickerton es lingüista!”

Recuerdo muy claramente los ejercicios en clase de Traducción inglés-español, en que justamente debíamos saber cuándo usar on the contrary (=al contrario, todo lo contrario) y cuándo to the contrary (=lo contrario, de lo contrario).

Algunos ejemplos:

I'm not sick; on the contrary, I'm in the peak of health.
No estoy enfermo; al contrario, estoy sanísimo.

Bad news! On the contrary, it´s very good news!
Malas noticias! Todo lo contrario, muy buenas!

Despite what you say to the contrary, his comments were unfair.
Pese a que digas lo contrario, sus comentarios no fueron justos.

There is evidence to the contrary.
Hay pruebas que indican lo contrario.

Sigo leyendo y sólo un poco más adelante, en la pág. 244, Bickerton vuelve a utilizar la misma locución con el mismo significado. Esto excluye que la primera vez haya sido un gazapo, un error inintencionado.
Dice: “Contra what Chomsky has claimed and most people have assumed, there´s no special ability to deal with recursive processing that has somehow evolved in the human species. There is, to the contrary, a complete absence of rules and restrictions”.

¿Será que estas dos expresiones se están intercambiando?, ¿se estará perdiendo la versión “on the contrary” en el inglés americano? No exactamente. Encuentro la solución en el fórum de dudas lingüísticas The Grammar Exchange: las dos expresiones sólo son intercambiables cuando cumplen una función discursiva, la de introducir una frase que expresa la idea opuesta a otra frase expuesta justo antes. To the contrary es aquí (al igual que on the contrary) un marcador discursivo y es característico del inglés americano.

Ejemplos:

You look great. Have you lost weight?
On the contrary/to the contrary, I've gained twenty pounds. It must be the dress.

Housing prices have not skyrocketed this quarter as predicted. On the contrary/to the contrary, they have remained stable for the third quarter in a row.
